white square little book

The Mr Men Series - Roger Hargreaves - Review:

The size of the book (small), the colours used (bright) and the drawing style on the cover (naïve) told me I was looking at a Mr Man Book.
yep I saw in Powells box this morning: L'ami de Madame Chance. and I had no distinct memory of the series but some memory of the square white little (2 staples as binding!) book with colorful person.
The books are all exactly the same in format – small, square, with white covers with a bold illustration of the featured Mr Man on front.
The Mr Men are all drawn with a cartoon-like simplicity that makes them so appealing to kids. They have funny shapes – ranging from round or oval right through to triangular and, in the case of Mr Greedy, pot bellied. They also have bright colours.

The Mr Men are a bunch of funny little fellows who seem to live inside a child’s drawing. Each one of them has only one defining characteristic – and this provides him with his entire life’s purpose. Mr Small, for instance, spends his whole day coping with being small. This includes eating one cornflake for breakfast. That makes me laugh even now!

The Little Miss books arrived in the Eighties...

Mr Hargreaves died in 1988, but his legacy lives on, and now his son Adam does the drawings. I can’t tell the difference – the boy certainly inherited his dad’s talent. I notice that the blurb inside says ‘copyright Mrs Roger Hargreaves’ which made we wonder if maybe his wife now writes the stories, using her husbands name? The internet let me down on this and I don’t know the answer. yep I came to this via ggl: Mrs.Roger.Hargreaves bcs I was wondering.

Free to Be ... You and Me

I was trying to remember... I remembered pink with little people on it ~ making shapes ... rg did not know it ... I was googling "childrens record me you" without much success. and I wonder if I have noted it here or on dlww or on dlcs? then I remembered "free to be me and you"! but that did not get me a record. finally wkp search free to be me --->
Free to Be… You and Me:The album has become a cult classic across the United States amongst many who were children in the 1970s.
Using poetry, songs, and sketches, the basic concept was to salute values such as individuality, tolerance, and happiness with one's identity; a major thematic message is that anyone, whether a boy or a girl, can achieve anything one wants.

SEE PICTURE cupcake club: February 2005 Archives: "Did you have 'Free to Be You and Me' when you were growing up, or were you raised by wolves? The nicest human parents in the 70s gave their kids this record to learn the songs about non-sexist gender roles (it's better than it sounds)."

dog happy

Dog that takes itself to the pub (on a No 10 bus) | July06 the Daily Mail
Like many country folk...
friendly busdriver, and barmaid, and farmer owner. it's like heaven.

-This is a very clever dog, who proves to us once again that dogs are people too

'Everyone loves him,' said farmer Gary Kay, 41, from Dunning-ton, a few miles outside York. Mr Kay said he believed Ratty's first visit to the pub was probably an accident.
'The bus stop is just along the road and he must have just happened to come across a bus. He ended up getting on and then getting off when everybody else did - which was when it hit York - and just walked straight into a pub.
'The people there ended up fussing over him so much that he ended up making a habit of it. that's cute. and smart. On the first occasion somebody spotted he was my dog and telephoned me to come and get him. But a girl behind the bar lived in the next village to me so when it continued she would bring him back in her car with her. It was funny because I would get a call every now and again to come and get him - I suppose that must have been when the barmaid wasn't on - and I would just pull up outside the pub and he would run out and jump in. I must have had to go and get him about 20 times.' what a sweetie.
Since his ban Ratty has been seen riding the school bus. Mr Kay added: 'I've had kids phoning me to say Ratty was on the bus with them. I've no idea how he gets home - he drives me mad.'
Peter Edwards, commercial director for the bus company First, said: 'I've heard of dogs waiting for people to get off buses but nothing like this. We don't charge for dogs so there's no reason why he can't get on.'

Twice a week he would trot out alone through the farm gates, jump on a number ten bus and head for his local, the Black Bull. The five-year-old dog would stay all day at the pub in York, where he had his own water dish and was fed his favourite sausages. He would even get a lift home at closing time from a friendly barmaid.
But suddenly his social life was left in ruins after the Black Bull was taken over, the barmaid left - and animals were banned. 'Dogs are not allowed in the pub,' declared duty manager Carl Sage. aw. Ratty's owners feel it can be only a matter of time, however, before he finds a new watering hole.

Scuffy the Tugboat (Little Golden Storybook) - by Gertrude Crampton:

Scuffy the tugbaot is one of the few books that have the meaning of there's no place like home.

A Kid's Review - December 14, 2006
Scuffy the tugbaot is one of the few books that have the meaning of there's no place like home. Scuffy the tugboat is about a little boat who thinks he has bigger priorities than hes given. Scuffy doesn't want to just sail in a tub or the sink, Scuffy wants to go on the a big adventure. As Scuffy went on his adventure he realized that he didn't a big river all he wanted in his life was a young boy, a guy with a poke a dot tie, and his favorite bath tub.

Modern Art Notes: For the kind among you who emailed to ask why I hadn't written word one about Robert Smithson's Floating Island (the photo at left, of Scuffy the Tugboat pulling the Island, is by this guy) on MAN, here's why: I wrote about it for today's LA Times. I'm pretty sure I have a few nuggets that no one else has written. I love the Island. It's proof that conceptual art can be visually engaging, that it can amuse and delight, that objecthood is as important as a smart idea.

in a giant house with giant books on big giant bookcases

mar: hi. thanks for your advice.
mar: I'll try turning both computers off, like you said.
mar: but I think I'll ring some stuff first. then do that before I leave.
germrr88: have you been able to access it from anywhere?
germrr88: This is the most important question: Can it be accessed at all?
mar: hmm. I'll try from the other computer in here. My guess is that it cannot be accessed at all.
mar: it's not opening from the other computer.
germrr88: Have you seen it on Jakes computer?
mar: no. I did a search for "red book" in files / folders and it did not find it!
mar:
"I don't like country music, but I don't mean to
denigrate those who do. And for the people who like
country music, denigrate means 'put down'."
mar:
Bob Newhart said that.
germrr88: Do a search for all Filemaker files on Jakes computer
germrr88: and look at them
mar:
do I just put "filemaker" in as a search term?
germrr88: is there a suffix to a filemaker file?
germrr88: like .jpg or .doc or that kind of thing
germrr88: did you do a search for just "red" ?
mar:
did not search for just red yet.
mar:
I think there is a suffix.
germrr88: try fpt
germrr88: or fp5
mar:
on Jake's computer I found 4 files called "Redbook" - BUT it would not let me open them - all of them have "last modified date"s in 1999. so that can't be right.
mar:
but I am logged in as "texts" on that computer - because I guessed the password. I don't know Jake's password. does that matter?
germrr88: yes. it probably matters.
germrr88: you can also look at his computer through our computer b/c we are networked. I could do it but i can't explain to you how to. you just have to click on network or something until look around until you see all the computers on the network and their names and just keep clicking and looking at what's inside Jake's computer.
mar:
but do I have to know his login?
germrr88: in what instance?
germrr88: looking directly? or looking through the UPS computer?
mar:
through the UPS computer, on the network
germrr88: you shouldn't need it.
mar:
do you think Th---- R--d is a giant?
germrr88: i can only respond to questions about the redbook
mar:
are you working on your applications? good on you, if you are. I'll stop asking you questions if so. unless something specific comes up (in my Redbook search) that I think you might know. thanks for your help.
germrr88: excellent

cali went to the hospital

checking in Now Cali - Live cat webcam from Los Angeles, CA

oh...
Hi everyone. Cali's in the hospital today. We don't know much yet but will let you know how she's doing as soon as we find out.
Posted by Catmin on January 22, 2007
We all hope there's nothing seriously wrong with Cali. please keep all of us out here on the web updated with her progress. We love little Cali kitty and are crossing our fingers for her prompt recovery.
Posted by We Love Cali & Choco on January 22, 2007
Update: Cali has a gland infection and is being operated on right now. The doctor wants to send her home tonight, soon after the operation. Cali tried to bite everybody in the cat hospital. Don't worry we'll take good care of her and special care for her safe return.
Posted by Catmin on January 22, 2007
Geez! Choco sure doesn't waste any time moving in on Cali's territory (the pink blanket). I wonder if he misses her or senses anything's wrong? It's so sad to see the empty box, knowing Cali had to go to the hospital. But it's good to hear she tried to bite everyone there - shows she still had some spunk. Atta girl, Cali! We hope the operation went smoothly and that Cali is recovering by now. Can't wait to see her rightfully claiming her spot on the webcam! All the best to Cali.
Posted by Kittylover on January 23, 2007
Ah, I see that Cali is back! Hooray!
